Blending History and Modern Functionality in Mount Jackson, Virginia
In Mount Jackson, we’re helping a homeowner update the house she grew up in. The renovation includes a complete interior remodel and significant exterior changes that is designed to add comfort and function while preserving the character of the original home.
Bringing Light In with New Windows and Doors
Early on, the homeowners decided to replace all of the windows with ProVia vinyl windows. The goal was to brighten each room and frame the views around the property. To maintain the home’s character, our team built custom trim onsite, carefully matching the style of the original exterior trim. Along with the windows, most of the doors were upgraded to ProVia fiberglass units. Many feature larger glass panels, creating easier access to outdoor spaces and more daylight inside.
Preserving Original Craftsmanship
While many updates are new, the project also focuses on refinishing existing features. The original hardwood floors are being sanded and refinished throughout which restore their warmth and durability. The staircase railings, which had dulled over time, are being stripped back to bare wood before getting a fresh finish. Even the two-inch-thick pocket doors, which operate on a gear-driven track system hidden in the walls, are being repaired so they function smoothly again which preserves a detail unique to older homes.
Redesigning for Modern Functionality
Several spaces in the house no longer fit the needs of modern living, so layout changes are also underway. A former closet is becoming a full guest bathroom, while the laundry and mudroom are being redesigned with stacked appliances to save space and keep the entry practical. The kitchen is also being rebuilt with a new layout, updated cabinets, and modern lighting to improve storage and usability. Upstairs, the new master bathroom suite requires reframing the old floor system above the kitchen to provide proper support.
The PWD Difference
The PWD difference comes down to the details and the relationships. We stay in close communication with homeowners throughout the process to ensure their vision is carried through. Our experienced team is truly passionate about preserving the character that makes older homes one of a kind. Projects like this are both a challenge and a privilege, and we take pride in doing the careful work it takes to get them right.
