A Modern Pool House and Garage for a Quiet Getaway
How Custom Andersen E-Series Windows Shaped This Modern Retreat
We partnered with Abrahamse & Company on a custom pool house and detached garage designed to give the homeowners a simple, comfortable place to unwind when they’re away from the city. The goal was to create modern, functional spaces that took advantage of the views of the rolling hills, the James River, and the surrounding property.
Since this isn’t a full-time residence, the windows and doors needed to bring in plenty of natural light, connect the indoor and outdoor areas, and keep the overall design clean and modern. Every decision centered on choosing the right shapes, sizes, and operating styles to match the architecture while keeping the spaces easy to use and maintain.
Custom Shapes and Modern Lines
This project required a variety of custom window shapes and operating styles to match the architecture, so we used Andersen E-Series windows and doors throughout both buildings. Large trapezoid units were designed to follow the roof pitch, including a matching trapezoid at the outdoor fireplace that ties into the stonework. These shapes fit the structure cleanly and help frame the views in a intentional way. To keep the look modern and unobstructed, the windows were built without grille patterns, allowing the landscape to stay front and center on every elevation.
A Pass-Through Window Designed for Easy Entertaining
One of the highlights of the project is the Andersen E-Series multi-slide pass-through window between the indoor bar area and the outdoor kitchen. It has a flush sill for easy passing of food and drinks. It pockets completely into the wall, leaving the entire opening clear when the window is open. This creates a seamless connection between the two spaces and adds a functional, high-end detail.
Details That Elevate the Space
To match the modern design, all exterior windows and doors were finished in Dark Bronze extruded aluminum, with mixed-grain fir on the interior for a warm but clean look. A combination of casements, awnings, and direct-set units were used throughout, based on the function of each room. We also provided a corner window frame that was later glazed on-site to give the homeowners an uninterrupted view. Both buildings include Velux skylights as well, adding natural light and keeping each space feeling open throughout the day.
Bringing the Vision Together
This project is a great example of how the right window and door choices can elevate a space without distracting from the architecture or the landscape. By combining custom shapes, modern lines, and strong materials, the homeowners now have a comfortable, low-maintenance retreat that feels connected to the outdoors. We’re proud to have partnered with Abrahamse & Company to help bring their vision to life and to create a retreat for these homeowners.
